“Wa” o “Ga”? Subukan ang Japanese Particle Quiz na ‘to! (N5/N4) 🎌

💡 Did You Know? Many Filipino learners actually use は (wa) and が (ga) incorrectly for their first 6 months of studying Japanese — and it’s totally normal! Even native Japanese speakers sometimes struggle to explain the difference clearly. But here’s the good news: once you master this concept, your Japanese will sound dramatically more natural. Let’s fix this together today! 🇯🇵✨

If you’re a Filipino learner studying Japanese, there’s one grammar point that probably haunts your dreams: when to use は (wa) versus が (ga). You’re not alone! 😅 Almost every student at the N5/N4 level struggles with this. But today, we’re going to break it down in the simplest way possible — using a real classroom scenario you might actually encounter.

フィリピン人学習者の皆さんが日本語を勉強するとき、おそらく一番悩む文法が「は」と「が」の使い分けです。N5・N4レベルのほとんどの学生がここでつまずきます。でも今日は、実際の教室でありそうな場面を使って、できるだけシンプルに説明しますね。

📝 Let’s Take the Quiz! クイズに挑戦しよう!

🎯 Ang Sitwasyon (The Scenario):

Nasa classroom ka. Nagtanong ang sensei:
「だれが がくせいですか?」
(Dare ga gakusei desu ka? / Who is the student?)

Gusto mong sumagot ng, “Ako ang estudyante.” Aling particle ang ilalagay mo sa loob ng sentence na:
「わたし ___ がくせいです。」 (Watashi ___ gakusei desu.)

A) は (wa)

B) が (ga)

C) を (wo)

🤔 Think carefully before scrolling down…

✅ Tamang Sagot (Correct Answer): B) が (ga)

💡 先生のポイント (Sensei’s Point): Kapag may tinatanong na question word (tulad ng だれ/sino, なに/ano, どこ/saan) at gusto mong ibigay ang eksaktong sagot, dapat mong gamitin ang が (ga) para markahan ang bagong impormasyon. Ibig sabihin, ang salitang “watashi” sa sagot mo ang mismong hinahanap ng tanong, kaya ‘yan ang naka-emphasize.

✅ わたし がくせいです。 (Watashi ga gakusei desu.)
Ako (ang bagong info) ang estudyante. This is the natural, correct response to the question “Who is the student?”

✅ わたし がくせいです。 (Watashi ga gakusei desu.)
(新しい情報)が学生です。「誰が学生ですか?」という質問に対する自然で正しい答えです。

Now, let’s talk about why は (wa) would feel a bit off here. If you said:

👉 わたし がくせいです。 (Watashi wa gakusei desu.)
→ “As for me, I am a student.” Tama rin naman ang sentence na ‘to grammatically, pero ginagamit ito kapag walang tanong na “sino” — halimbawa, nagpapakilala ka lang o nagkwekwento tungkol sa sarili mo. Hindi ito natural na direktang sagot sa “Dare ga gakusei desu ka?”

では、なぜ「は」だと少し不自然に感じられるのでしょうか。

👉 わたし がくせいです。 (Watashi wa gakusei desu.)
→「私は学生です」という文は文法的には正しいですが、これは「誰が?」という質問がない場合 — たとえば自己紹介や自分のことを話すときに使います。「誰が学生ですか?」への直接の答えとしては不自然なのです。

🧠 Bakit Nga Ba Nakakalito ang “Wa” at “Ga”?

Let’s be honest: in both English and Tagalog, we don’t really have particles that work exactly like は and が. In Tagalog, we use word order and markers like “ang” and “ng” differently. In English, we just say “I am a student” — no special particle needed! So naturally, when Filipino learners encounter these two Japanese particles, confusion sets in. 🫠

正直に言うと、英語にもタガログ語にも「は」と「が」のような助詞は正確には存在しません。タガログ語では「ang」や「ng」のようなマーカーを語順とともに使いますし、英語では “I am a student” と言うだけで特別な助詞は不要です。ですから、フィリピン人の学習者がこの2つの助詞に出会うと、混乱するのも当然です。

But here’s the thing — many students at SAMURAI Japan Business Center have told me that once they understood the core logic behind は and が, everything else in Japanese grammar started clicking into place. So investing time to master this now will pay off tremendously later. Let me introduce you to a concrete example.

でも、Samurai Japan Business Center の多くの学生が言うには、「は」と「が」の核となるロジックを理解した途端、日本語の文法全体がつながって見えるようになったそうです。だから、今このポイントに時間を投資すれば、後でものすごく役立ちます。ここで具体的な例を紹介しましょう。

👤 Real-Life Scenario: Kilalanin si Maria

Maria is a 23-year-old call center agent from Cebu who’s been studying Japanese for 3 months at SAMURAI Japan Business Center. One day, her sensei asked the class: 「だれが レポートを かきましたか?」 (Dare ga repōto o kakimashita ka? / Who wrote the report?)

Maria raised her hand and answered: 「わたし かきました。」 (Watashi ga kakimashita. / I wrote it.)

Her sensei smiled and nodded. Why was this correct? Because the question used the question word だれ (who), and Maria’s answer provided the new, focused information — herself! If Maria had said 「わたし かきました」, it would have sounded like “As for me, I wrote something (but that’s not really answering your question directly).”

The next day, Maria wanted to simply share what she did over the weekend. She said: 「わたし レポートを かきました。」 (Watashi wa repōto o kakimashita. / As for me, I wrote a report.) No one asked “who,” so using は here was perfect — she was just stating a topic about herself. 🎯

マリアさんの例からわかるように、質問に答えるときは「が」、自分のことを話題として話すときは「は」という使い分けが基本です。

As you can see from Maria’s example, the basic rule is: use when answering a question with a question word, and use when introducing yourself or talking about yourself as a topic.

📖 Simple Rules na Pwede Mong Tandaan

Here’s a super simplified breakdown that I always share with my students at our center. Keep this on your phone or notebook! 📱

これは、私がいつも生徒さんたちに教えている超シンプルなまとめです。スマホやノートに保存しておいてくださいね。

🔵 が (ga) — Ang “Spotlight” Particle

  • ✔ Sumasagot sa tanong na may question word (だれ, なに, どこ, いつ)
  • ✔ Nagbibigay-diin sa bagong impormasyon
  • ✔ Ginagamit sa mga phenomenon o pangyayari (ex: あめが ふっています / Umuulan)
  • ✔ Ginagamit pag may nakita kang bago (ex: あっ、バスが きた! / Oh, dumating na ang bus!)

Think: “GA” = Give Answer / Give Attention to new info!

🔴 は (wa) — Ang “Topic” Particle

  • ✔ Minamarkahan ang paksa (topic) ng pangungusap
  • ✔ Ginagamit kapag alam na ng kausap ang pinag-uusapan
  • ✔ Para sa general statements at facts (ex: にほんは きれいです / Japan is beautiful)
  • ✔ Para sa contrast o comparison (ex: コーヒーは のみますが、おさけは のみません / I drink coffee, but I don’t drink alcohol)

Think: “WA” = What Are we talking about?

💡 先生のポイント (Sensei’s Point): Isipin mo na lang na が (ga) ay parang spotlight sa stage — it shines on the NEW or IMPORTANT information. Samantala, は (wa) ay parang label sa isang folder — it tells you what the whole conversation (or sentence) is ABOUT. Kapag sanay ka nang ganito mag-isip, mas madali mo nang mapipili ang tama! 🎭

💬 よくある質問 (FAQ)

Here are some questions that beginner students at SAMURAI Japan Business Center frequently ask about this topic.

A: Magandang tanong ito! As for me, estudyante ako” — which is a general statement, not a direct answer to the question.

Simpleng sagot: Ang tanong ay humihingi ng specific identity (“sino”), kaya ang sagot ay dapat naka-focus sa identity na ‘yun — at が ang particle na nagbibigay ng focus na iyon.

❓ Q3: いつ「は」と「が」の両方を使いますか? (May pagkakataon bang pareho silang ginagamit sa isang sentence?)

A: Yes, absolutely! 👍 Sa mas kumplikadong sentences, madalas mong makikita ang both は and が. Halimbawa:

わたし にほんご すきです。
(Watashi wa nihongo ga suki desu. / As for me, I like the Japanese language. / Tungkol sa akin, gusto ko ang Japanese.)

Dito, ang nagmamarka ng overall topic ng sentence (“tungkol sa akin”), at ang nagmamarka kung ANO ang gusto mo (ang object ng “suki”). This pattern — [Topic] は [Something] が [adjective/verb] — is SUPER common in Japanese, so it’s a great one to master at the N5/N4 level!

Simpleng sagot: Oo! Common pattern ang [Topic] は [Something] が [predicate]. Halimbawa: わたしは ねこが すきです (I like cats). Dito, は = topic (ako), が = object ng “like” (pusa).

📝 Lesson Summary まとめ

🔵 が (ga)
